Follow the petty cash! Fabulously wealthy, millionaire baseball players at the New York Yankees donated $25,600 Whole American Dollars between 2003 and 2006 to city and state lawmakers key to the development of the New Yankee stadium. Can you believe it? We’re talking wheelbarrows of one dollar bills here! Some experts are saying that the team donated this money to avoid having to load all their change into that broken Coinstar at C-Town. [Read More]

I’m not saying anyone should take this as a sign of where the wind’s blowing in New York’s statewide debate on hydraulic fracturing. All I’m telling you is that—if you are unemployed (and you are)—you might be able to get yourself an entry-level position deploying the state’s trendiest, most controversial natural gas extraction method, if you’ve got $975 and 72 hours to spare [Read More]

A superficially obvious thing happened this past Friday; a superficially obvious thing that, beneath its “No Duh” patina, masked some of the truly chasmic fault lines within the GOP’s big tent. Randy Altschuler, who made his fortune creating a company that outsources thousands of financial industry jobs to India (while creating 700 whole American jobs), is making his second bid to take NY-1′s congressional seat from Democrat Tim Bishop. This is the Randy Altschuler who somehow was endorsed this Friday by the ur-nationalist, paleoconservative John Birch Society. Crazy, right? This guy reading over here definitely knows what I’m talking about. [Read More]

Stupid Canadian Company Offers Stupid Fracking Compromise

A GOOD COMPROMISE leaves everyone unhappy, and I can’t imagine anyone being even remotely pleased with a waterless form of fracking—one that produces less groundwater contamination, improves natural gas yield and lets us all get back to the important business of ruining our children’s children’s futures. The North Country’s Nauseating Redistricting Debate

LATFOR! New York's Favorite Redistricting Body! w00000!

THE NORTH COUNTRY currently holds 13,243 prison inmates from across New York state (but mostly from New York City). As in every other U.S. state—except Maine and Vermont—these prisoners can’t vote, run for office, or donate campaign mackerel while incarcerated. Yet it was only last year that the New York State legislature ended the bizarre practice of counting these prisoners as anything but residents of the town where tthey had originally lived, prior to their arrest. Unfortunately, this law only covers population figures applied to state senate and assembly member redistricting—leaving New York’s congressional districts open to a system of prison-based gerrymandering that’s as absurd as it is odious. FOR YEARS Goldman Sachs has been the dominant player in algorithmic trading and, in particular, the high-frequency trading (HFT) market, boasting the largest and (arguably) most successful ‘automated trading’ operation on Wall Street. That changed this week, with the NYSE’s weekly program trading report unveiling a shadowy new top firm, Latour Trading, LLC—whose website is completely effing blank! [Read More]

SO ANYWAY, Andrew Ross Sorkin and Dealbook, his “financial news service” or whatever, continue their Faustian bargain with Wall Street this week—publishing milquetoast apologia in exchange for idk … A velveteen cushion of ad revenue from the very financial services they’re supposed to be objectively covering? A share of the Wall Street Journal’s readership as revenge for the journal creating a pointless Metro section exclusively to compete with the New York Times? A chance to get some c%l VC’s and i-Bankers to follow them on FaceB%k? “W%f!” u kno? [Read More]
